Panoramic views of the horizon from the Jurassic coast eastwards to Burton Bradstock and Portland across to Torbay in the west. These videos include classic sunrise and sunset scenes in winter when the elevation of the sun is low and sunrise is over the sea. They feature many impressive cloud formations with their attendant sky colours and occasionally, unusual meteorological phenomena.
The Back Story
Having lived on the sea front at Sidmouth for over 20 years, I have become accustomed to seeing many spectacular cloud- and sea-scapes but have never become blasé about them. Both sky and sea are constantly changing with the weather, time-of-day and seasons. For no other reason than I could, I decided to start making smartphone videos of the horizon on most days and to build an archive of video files. It was suggested to me that the Sidmouth webcams were very popular and people might want to see my videos so why didn’t I put them online ?
So here they are !
About Sidmouth
Sidmouth is a seaside town in East Devon, South-West England with views spanning Lyme Bay. The town attracts tourists throughout the year, often in the form of coach trips for day visits or supporting longer stays in its numerous hotels. Sidmouth is famous for its week-long folk music festival at the beginning of August each year with well-known artists performing in the marquee on ‘The Ham’ on the east side of the town. At the end of August there is the Regatta which features an airshow - sometimes including the RAF Red Arrows squad. Both Folk Week and the Regatta conclude with seafront processions and magnificent firework displays. At the end of September is the Sidmouth Carnival with a spectacular procession of brightly-lit floats, onboard dancers and pounding music. Many other smaller events are held throughout the year keeping the town busy and supporting charities and local traders.
